WWAY-TV (Wilmington, NC): iStent Patient George Discusses the Importance of Routine Medical Care Amid Pandemic

Jun 9, 2021 | Blog

“There are all sorts of procedures that need to be done, even with the pandemic raging.”- George Griffin, age 77

Many older adults have chosen to remain in their homes throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic over concerns of contracting the virus. However, if patients are putting off their regular appointments due to this fear, it becomes challenging for them to receive necessary medical care.

After consulting with his doctor and learning about the safety precautions taken by physicians during the pandemic, such as wearing face masks and shields, George Griffin of Wilmington, NC, decided not to delay treatment for his glaucoma and cataracts. Now, he’s encouraging others who might be hesitant to do the same.

Dr. Matthew Robinson, an ophthalmologist at Ochsner Eye, understands that some patients may feel uneasy about visiting the doctor’s office for care during this time, but he stresses the importance of trusting your physician and keeping up with routine appointments or treatment.

In George’s case, Dr. Robinson knew it was crucial to treat his glaucoma with an iStent inject® W, or else he could potentially lose his vision. iStent inject® W is a tiny implant that can help lower pressure in the eye, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for medication, like daily eye drops, at the discretion of a physician. After deciding to undergo the procedure during his cataract surgery, George had his right eye treated with an iStent inject W on December 2, 2020 and his left eye on December 16, 2020.

George and Dr. Robinson recently spoke with WWAY-TV to discuss George’s journey with glaucoma and the importance of seeking timely treatment. You can check out the full segment here.
