The Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Washington): Local Optometrist Treating Glaucoma Becomes Patient, Implanted with iStent inject® W

Apr 19, 2022 | Blog

“[Dr. Kordish] was on three previous medications for glaucoma, and luckily we were able to get him off all three, which makes your eye a lot more comfortable. The cost of drops and the cumbersome nature of putting them in every day; it’s a big advantage not to have to do that anymore.”Dr. Jonathan Haymore, MultiCare Rockwood Eye and Optical Center

As an optometrist, Dr. David Kordish has treated patients with glaucoma and cataracts for years. Then when he began experiencing his own vision issues, he found himself in the patient’s seat. Diagnosed with both cataracts and glaucoma, Dr. Kordish knew he needed to treat his conditions to prevent any additional vision loss.

Prior to cataract surgery, Dr. Kordish had been managing his glaucoma with multiple daily eye drops. However, he was in search of another treatment for his condition, as the drops irritated his eyes. At the recommendation of his ophthalmologist, Dr. Jonathan Haymore of MultiCare Rockwood Eye and Optical Center, Dr. Kordish was implanted with the iStent inject® W during cataract surgery in both eyes. The iStent inject® W is a tiny implant that can help lower pressure in the eye, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for medication, like daily eye drops, at the discretion of a physician.

Following the procedure, Dr. Kordish has been able to stop using all three of his daily glaucoma medications. Now that his condition has been treated, he is once again able to focus on his work at Brisbane Eyecare in Spokane Valley, where he continues to help patients with glaucoma and cataracts. Only now, he can recommend specific treatments from firsthand experience.

Dr. Kordish and Dr. Haymore recently spoke with The Spokesman-Review to discuss Dr. Kordish’s journey with glaucoma and the importance of seeking timely treatment. You can check out the full story here.
