Barbara was diagnosed with glaucoma and cataracts eight years ago. For many years she was able to manage her glaucoma with drops. However, she became concerned when her glaucoma began to worsen and she experienced double vision. It wasn’t until recently that Barbara discovered iStent inject® W as an effective way to reduce eye pressure. Since the procedure, Barbara no longer is concerned about her eye health and is finding more enjoyment in her active lifestyle!

Witnessing A Change

In 2022, during her annual eye exam and after years of managing her glaucoma with eye drops, Barbara found herself struggling to see when her doctor placed two fingers above her brow. Her doctor noticed Barbara’s glaucoma and cataracts had worsened and provided a referral to Dr. Loan Ramsey at Swagel Wootton Eye Institute. Barbara knew her vision was worsening and did not want her eyesight to get in the way of her active lifestyle. Each day she walks with her husband, frequents the gym, volunteers at the Chamber of Commerce, enjoys trying new restaurants, and even loves an ATVing adventure! Not wanting to jeopardize her vision,  she knew she had to make an appointment with Dr. Ramsey.

 Looking Forward To Relief

As the second leading cause of blindness, Barbara was relieved when Dr. Ramsey informed her there was an effective way to treat her glaucoma and help reduce the pressure in her eyes. It was during the appointment that Dr. Ramsey introduced Barbara to the iStent inject® W, one of the smallest devices known to be implanted in the human body that can have benefits for glaucoma patients with cataracts. Wanting to know more about the procedure, Dr. Ramsey explained that the stents create two bypasses, or openings, between the front part of the eye and its natural drainage pathway, restoring the eye’s natural ability to drain fluid and reducing intraocular pressure. After learning about the stents and the impressive technology, Barbara didn’t want to wait, so she received her first stent in early June 2022 in her left eye, and then two weeks later her right eye was treated.

Carrying On With Confidence

Since the procedures, Barbara is feeling confident knowing that her glaucoma is under control. She is spending quality time with her children and grandchildren as well as looking forward to more opportunities to stay active – and to get on the back of an ATV. Barbara has never let her vision stop her from her active lifestyle before, but she is thankful she took the time out of her busy schedule to receive iStent inject® W so she can continue to live a life she loves.

INDICATION FOR USE
The iStent inject® W Trabecular Micro-Bypass System Model G2-W is indicated for use in conjunction with cataract surgery for the reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) in adult patients with mild-to-moderate primary open-angle glaucoma.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
The iStent inject® W is contraindicated in eyes with angle-closure glaucoma, traumatic, malignant, uveitic, or neovascular glaucoma, discernible congenital anomalies of the anterior chamber (AC) angle, retrobulbar tumor, thyroid eye disease, or Sturge-Weber Syndrome or any other type of condition that may cause elevated episcleral venous pressure.

WARNINGS
Gonioscopy should be performed prior to surgery to exclude congenital anomalies of the angle, PAS, rubeosis, or conditions that would prohibit adequate visualization of the angle that could lead to improper placement of the stent and pose a hazard.

MRI INFORMATION
The iStent inject® W is MR-Conditional, i.e., the device is safe for use in a specified MR environment under specified conditions; please see Directions for Use (DFU) label for details.

PRECAUTIONS
The surgeon should monitor the patient postoperatively for proper maintenance of intraocular pressure (IOP). The safety and effectiveness of the iStent inject® W have not been established as an alternative to the primary treatment of glaucoma with medications, in children, in eyes with significant prior trauma, abnormal anterior segment, chronic inflammation, prior glaucoma surgery (except SLT performed > 90 days preoperative), glaucoma associated with vascular disorders, pseudoexfoliative, pigmentary or other secondary open-angle glaucomas, pseudophakic eyes, phakic eyes without concomitant cataract surgery or with complicated cataract surgery, eyes with medicated intraocular pressure (IOP) > 24 mmHg or unmedicated intraocular pressure (IOP) < 21 mmHg or > 36 mmHg, or for implantation of more or less than two stents.

ADVERSE EVENTS
Common postoperative adverse events reported in the iStent inject® randomized pivotal trial included stent obstruction (6.2%), intraocular inflammation (5.7% for iStent inject® vs. 4.2% for cataract surgery only), secondary surgical intervention (5.4% vs. 5.0%) and BCVA loss ≥ 2 lines ≥ 3 months (2.6% vs. 4.2%).
